Situated on a hill on Old Sparta Rd., the Shoulderbone Plantation and its unspoiled farmland are a wonderful relic of the past. The plantation belongs to Robert Lanier who painstakingly restored it to its former glory. The two upper floors had 33 windows, three transoms and sidelights with a total of 454 panes that all needed to be reglazed. Whenever boards had to be removed to install modern wiring and plumbing, they were carefully numbered and put back in their place with the original nails. Bricks from old chimneys were used for the kitchen floor. The 11 mantels in the house's 12 rooms are original. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.Hancock County (GA) Copyright 2008 D. Nelson
